Yesterday was my last “official” day at work. At 11am I had my exit interview and then had lunch with some of my colleagues in the cafeteria before heading out. It was a bittersweet good bye to a place I have worked at for 11 years. I will miss my colleauges and internal customers more than the company or the job itself.
I did get some good news – I still get 3 more weeks of pay before severance kicks in so my severence and health insurance will last me through January. On top of that I should be eligible for unemployment for 6 months as well and that gives me through March to find work.
Of course I still want to find a new job as soon as possible – when I do I can take the remainder of the severance and apply it towards the downpayment of my townhouse. It will help me get to the 20% down faster so I can buy the townhouse from Dave faster. In the end we’ll see what happens but that would be the ideal.
At any rate I’m feeling pretty good about everything now and I feel free from the corporate shackles, at least for a little while. In the end I still would prefer to work for a corporation though because of the benefits they can provide over and above a small business or contract/consulting work. If I end up doing more consulting work I may need to look into purchasing personal health insurance which of course never comes cheap. I do know I do not want to purchase COBRA … its far too expensive. So I will need to do some research and shop around and see what I can find.
