This is a homemade take on an American classic, while still being quick and easy to make. This way you can ensure most of your ingredients are organic and control the amount of salt that is added as well, plus the fresh ingredients really perk up this old standard.
- 1 lb of ground beef or turkey (for vegetarians, substitute about 1 lb of boca crumbles)
- 8 oz can of tomato sauce
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/2 an onion – finely chopped
- 1/2 green pepper – finely chopped
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 clove of garlic
- 1/4 tsp mustard
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 1/4 tsp celery seed
- Hamburger buns
Mix together the tomato sauce, onion, green pepper, salt, garlic, mustard chili powder and celery seed. Begin browning the ground meat (or boca crumbles) and add in the sauce. Cook until the meat is completely cooked (or the boca crumbles are completely thawed and heated). Serve on hamburger buns.
